EXPERIMENT 3 FINAL SUBMISSION


MASHUP


Comfort in architecture is given by two words. One is "space." The other is "light." Space must be well-designed for its function and can be comparatively larger in some extent. For example, narrow or small spaces are not as good for a modern library, it must be versatile yet appropriate for its main use. Good designs in space are where it is not dictated to the individual how they should perceive, operate or feel in the building, but have the flexibility to explore and experience it for themselves. Natural light should be made good use of in architecture. Less light, spaces where you don't see the sky, not as good. Visible light plays a very important role in human's life. It also helps to stimulate the body's production of the neurotransmitter serotonin, which can reduce the symptoms of depression.” Light certainly has a physiological impact on people.These are the two keys to the future. I am always searching for more light and space. Architects need to deliver hope and optimism. It is part of our duty.

DESIGN CONCEPT

Section of the building is based on Zaha Hadid's Riverside Museum plan. At the beginning I wanted to build a symmetrical section for the school. However, after tested for many times, I change my section to a more abstract one.

The shape is based on Zaha Hadid's Riverside Museum plan. However, it is changed a lot.
The facade of the building is built of triangular glass,wood & steel structure. Indented arrangement could help to shape the shadow of the building.

A well-designed space, particularly a modern library, must also be versatile yet appropriate for its main use. “Good designs are where it is not dictated to the individual how they should perceive, operate or feel in the building, but have the flexibility to explore and experience it for themselves,” says Dr Marialena Nikolopoulou, from the school of architecture at the university of Kent. Less light, underground spaces, spaces where you don't see the sky, not as good. Natural light, for example, can help hospital patients to recover and school pupils perform better. “Light certainly has a physiological impact on people,” says Dr Alan Lewis, a lecturer in architecture at Manchester university. Research has shown that visible light helps the human body to regulate the production of the hormone melatonin, which in turn helps to regulate our body clock, affecting sleep patterns and digestion. Visible light also helps to stimulate the body's production of the neurotransmitter serotonin, which can reduce the symptoms of depression.” These are the two keys to the future. I am always searching for more light and space. Wide spaces are what I am using at Ground Zero. I believe that architects need to deliver hope and optimism. It is part of our duty.

THE TWO CONCEPTS:

   OSCAR NIEMEYER:

  • Monumentality as a result of the lack of recognisable scale indicators

   Marc Fornes:

  • Play of light and shadow to create ever-changing ephemeral space

ELECTROLIQUID AGGREGATION:
The lack of recognisable scale indicators could combine play of light and shadow to create monumentality with ever-changing ephemeral space.

The organic form of the design enables ever-changing shadow which creates shelter for passengers. The unique and fluid shape of the stop makes it easier for passengers to find. 

Theme: The multicultural students and staff who study or work at UNSW

As huge numbers of multicultural students and staff of UNSW live all around Sydney, most of them need to get to the main entrance of UNSW to get to work or have class. However, the set-up of rail stop obstructs people's getting around. Level 1 of the train stop could work as a open-air platform for people to feel at ease as well as a bridge to get to the other side of the road, no matter if the train is passing by.

STOP OVERVIEW FROM CAMPUS SIDE
The whole stop consists of two levels. The passengers take train on ground level and could get help from the counter. Administration is on level 1 and passengers or pedestrians could get to the other side of the road at any time through level 1.

At the counter, tickets and assistance is offered

LEVEL 1  VIEW 
The platform of level 1 is not only a bridge for passengers to get to the other side of the road but also provide a shelter for passengers.

The huge platform shades all the stop. No matter it rains or snows, passengers could always have a comfortable waiting area.

STAIRS FROM ABOVE GROUND STUDIO TO THE SHOWROOM. AS A CAFE HAVE DIFFERENT KINDS OF FOODS, EACH PLATE OF ABOVE GROUND STUDIO COULD BE A DEPARTMENT OF ONE SPECIFIC KIND OF FOOD. AND THE THREE STAIRS FROM UP TO DOWNSTAIRS ENABLE CHEFS FROM DIFFERENT DEPARTMENTS COULD SHOW THEIR WORKS.


A PLATFORM WILL MOVE THE MOTORBIKE FROM UNDERGROUND STUDIO TO THE SHOWROOM, AND THEN THE DRIVER WILL DRIVE THE MOTORBIKE ALL AROUND THE SHOWROOM TO SHOW THE AUDIENCE THE SOUND OF ITS ENGINE AND THE SMELL WHEN ITS WORKING.

SINGLE UNIT OF ABOVE GROUND STUDIO. EACH UNIT COULD BE A OFFICE OF A CHEF, THEY CAN HAVE A PERSONAL SPACE TO TEST AND INVESTIGATE NEW CUISINES.

STAIRS OF BELOW GROUND STUDIO (JEFF WRIGHT), ACTUALLY IT'S A TUNNEL FROM BELOW GROUND STUDIO LEADING TO THE SHOWROOM. THERE'S A RAMP ALL AROUND THE SHOWROOM THAT THE DRIVER CAN RIDE THE MOTORBIKE ABOUND THE ROOM TO SHOW WHAT THE BIKE IS LIKE WHEN WORKING.



THE MAIN ENTRANCE OF THE SHOWROOM. BEFORE ENTERING, AUDIENCE COULD FEEL THAT THE TUNNEL IS ENGAGED IN A PART OF LANDSCAPE.
